The Sunday Break / Charlotte, NC
by Skip Maloney
About five weeks ago, the city of Charlotte, NC, began hosting a weekly pool tournament called the Sunday Break, being run by Ron Park. With the exception of weekends when some of the major tours are in town (the Great Southern Billiard Tour or the J. Pechauer Southeast Open Tour, for example), a new room that opened for business January 1 called Paradise Billiards will be employing 2 Gold Crown and 16 Diamond tables to play host to this weekly tournament. On February 15, the $100-added event drew 20 entrants. Katie Cowan worked her way through the one-loss side of the bracket to become the weekly event’s second female winner.
Eric Lowder moved into the hot seat with a 7-4 win over Brian Ballard and then moved Larry Lowe over to meet Cowan 7-6. Lowe had sent John Turner over 7-5.
Cowan, in the meantime, got by Jason Milner and Nick Cleto to meet Ballard. Mark Stephenson, after a shut-out over Lisa Collette and a 5-3 win over Jeff Hepler was there to meet Turner. It was a short visit to the one-loss side for Ballard and Turner as Cowan and Stephenson moved into the quarterfinals on the heels of hill-hill wins. Cowan then dropped Stephenson into fourth place and squared off against Lowe in the semifinals. Another double-hill struggle ensued, with Cowan advancing to the finals.
Cowan and Lowe traded racks straight through to hill-hill. They continued to battle in the final rack until Cowan took a long, sharp cut shot on the 9 that dropped in, leaving her in first place.
Park has instituted a mini event at this weekly tournament, which he calls The Big Rack. Players registered to participate in the tournament add money to a pool, which is won by a randomly chosen player if he or she can break and run a rack of 10 balls. If the player fails to do this, the money is carried over to a subsequent Sunday Break event. John Turner, who was selected to make the attempt on Sunday, failed to sink a ball on the break and saw $400 move into next week’s event.
