Day 1 at Regional Tour Championships
A total of 24 players return tomorrow to continue their quest for the WPBA Regional Tour Championship, which will grant one lucky winner entry into all of the WPBA’s 2009 Classic Tour events. Parlor Billiards in Bellevue, WA, is playing host to the 64-player field.
The winners’ bracket has winnowed down to their final eight players, which includes Ming Ng of Florida, who will face off against Montana’s Morgan Steinman (pictured) in the next round. Janet Ritchey will meet Jacqui Herrera in the next round.
Last year’s champ, Susan Mello was sent west by Mary Hopkin in a close 7-5 match and squeaked out a hill-hill win with Diana Minor. She will need to do better than that tomorrow when she faces Austin’s star Cristina De La Garza at 9a.m. The final match of the evening to wrap up was Canadian league champion Denise Belanger and local favorite Mikki Small who defeated Denver’s Samm Diep in the first round.
Some WPBA regulars surprised us with early exits; Candi Rego and Erica Testa. Also departing sooner than expected were Veronique Menard and Spirit Tour Champ Stephanie Mitchell.
This year’s champion receives paid entries into four Classic WPBA tour stops and $900 in travel expenses. Though there are currently only three Classic events scheduled for the year, the WPBA is hoping to book another event or allow the winner to receive the entry fee in cash.
Holly Sholes triumphed in her hill-hill bout with Michelle Monk to advance, and her next opponent will be Tina Larsen, who served Emily Duddy a 9-0 donut. In the final winners’-bracket match, it will be Susan Williams versus Bonnie Plowman.
