Roberts Wins First KF Cues Billiard Stop

KF Cues Open 9-Ball Tour / Tampa, FL

James Roberts emerged from a strong field of 36 entrants to take home his first-ever win in an open event on the KF Cues Open 9-Ball Tour stop January 17. Hosted by Big Oʼs Billiards in Tampa, FL, the $1,000-added event featured a list of winnerʼs circle veterans, including Corey Deuel, Donnie Mills, Tommy Kennedy, and the tourʼs director, Tony Crosby.

Roberts came from the one-loss side to win, but he hadnʼt been there for long. From among the winnerʼs side final four, heʼd sent Kennedy west 7-5 before facing Trevor Braymore in the battle for the hot seat. Braymore earned the right to face him following a 7-4 victory over Neil Fujiwara, whoʼd just sent Mills west with a shut-out and Deuel before that in a double-hill battle. The hot seat struggle that followed was just that–a struggle that was hill-hill before Braymore gained the hot seat.

On the one-loss side, Crosby sent Mills to join them and then defeated Harry Hess for the right to meet Kennedy, who then moved into the quarterfinals with a 7-5 win. Bill Dunsmore, in the meantime, survived back-to-back, hill-hill contests versus Tim Parisian and Josh Degler to meet Fujiwara. Dunsmore had been down 6-2 against Degler but came back to win it. He had things tied at 5 against Fujiwara, but when he scratched shooting at the 6 ball in the eleventh rack, Fujiwara didnʼt let him back to the table. In the quarterfinal match that followed, yet another hill-hill affair, Fujiwara found himself hooked on the 1 ball but responded to the challenge, jumping the 8 ball to sink the 1 and move into the semifinals against Roberts.

Roberts, though, had already taken his one misstep of the day in the hot seat match against Braymore. He sent Fujiwara and then, in the finals, Braymore home with 7-3 wins and joined the ranks of winnerʼs circle veterans.

In a $700-added amateur event that drew 50 entrants Sunday, Albert Howe came from the one-loss side to defeat Mark Wathen in the finals. Wathen gained the hot seat following a shut-out over Ted Lepak and a come-from-behind victory over Bill Dunsmore that reached double-hill before it was over. Howe, in the meantime, was busy recording three victories on the one-loss side in which he gave up only a single rack in his climb to the quarterfinals. He moved past Adam Wheeler 5-3 in those quarterfinals and Dunsmore 5-2 in the semifinals to take on Wathen. A commanding 9-3 win gave Howe his first victory on the KF Cues Tour.
