Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Rocky Mount, NC
by Skip Maloney
Mike Davis followed up a win at the Reno Open in the tail end of 2008 with a victory on the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour. Davis went undefeated through a field of 27 entrants on hand for the $1,000-added event, hosted by Sharks & Shooters in Rocky Mount, NC, the weekend of January 23-25.
Davis started his final drive among the winners’ side final four with a 7-4 victory over Russell Sasser that put him in the hot seat match versus Steven Page. Page had sent Sidney Champion west with a 7-3 win. Davis got out in front and on the hill 6-3 in the hot seat match that followed, but Page fought back to tie it. Page made two balls on the subsequent break but lost control of the table shortly thereafter, opening the door for Davis to advance.
Michael Fuller was working his way back to the finals from the west side. He was waiting for Champion after a 7-1 victory over Phillip Richardson and a 7-4 win over Chad Pike. Leroy Bryant got by Chris Vollmar and Chris Bruner for the right to meet Sasser. It was Fuller and Bryant advancing to the quarterfinals after that, with Fuller prevailing 7-4 to take on Page in the semifinals. Fuller dominated that match 7-2 and turned his attention to Davis.
Fuller used some of the momentum he’d built up over his last five matches to take an early lead and was ahead by three at the end of the ninth game. His sixth win proved to be his last, as Davis caught up and moved past him to win it 9-3.
In a concurrent juniors’ event, which drew eight entrants, Chris Bruner took home the $50 first prize after defeating Andrew Coley 7-4 in the finals. In the ladies’ event, Katie Cowan defeated Karen Webb 7-2 in the finals and brought home a $40 first prize. Prior to his second-place finish in the open event, Fuller took home a $125 prize for first place in the Friday mini tournament that drew 14, besting Russell Sasser 7-2 in the finals. Sidney Champion placed third in the same event. Trey Sprye finished in fourth place.
