Donnie Mills and Elvis Rodriguez took home top honors in the open and amateur divisions of the KF Cues Open 9-Ball Tour the weekend of December 13-14. The $1,000-added open event on Saturday drew 23 entrants to Hammerhead’s Billiards in Holiday, FL, while the $700-added amateur event on Sunday drew 62 players and stretched on into the early hours of Monday morning.

Mills, according to tour director Tony Crosby, was “pretty much unstoppable all day” on Saturday. He faced 56 racks on his way to the winner’s circle and gave up only 16 of them. From among the winners’ side final four, he defeated Jose Aquino 9-4 to move into the hot seat match against Mark Coats. Coats, who’d bested Crosby in a hill-hill match in which Crosby reached the hill first, went to the semifinals on the heels of a 9-3 Mills win.

Adam Wheeler and Josh Lewis were on the one-loss side waiting for Aquino and Crosby. Aquino advanced 9-7, but Crosby dropped into the tie for fifth place with a 9-5 defeat at the hands of Lewis. Aquino then defeated Lewis in the quarterfinals 9-5 to face Coats in the semifinals. Aquino moved back for a rematch against Mills with a 9-7 win over Coats. In the finals that followed, Mills prevailed 11-5, bringing home the $610 first-place prize.

Rodriguez’ romp through the 62-entrant field of the amateur event included double-dipping Mike Delawder in the hot seat match and finals. Both of the matches leading up to the hot seat match were double-hill affairs, with Rodriguez sending Mark Wathen west and Delawder doing likewise to Johnny Demet. In the hot seat match, Rodriguez shut Delawder out and began a long wait for his return.

Wathen and Demet would end up in the quarterfinals and play the third of four hill-hill struggles among the event’s final six match-ups. Demet advanced to the semifinals against Delawder where he fell victim to the last hill-hill win of the day. In deference to its late start, the amateur finals were reduced to a race to 7, which, taking advantage of a number of unforced errors by Delawder, Rodriguez won 7-3.
