Mills and Degler Take KF Cues Billiards Event
KF Cues Open /Amateur 9-Ball Tour / Spring Hill, FL
by Skip Maloney
Donnie Mills and Josh Dengler emerged as winners of the open and amateur events, respectively, at the KF Cues 9-Ball Tour the weekend of November 29-30. The $1,000-added open event drew 30 entrants to Capone’s in Spring Hill, FL, while the $700-added amateur event drew 35.
On Saturday in the open division, Mills’ final three steps to victory began with a commanding 9-1 victory over Jim Sandaler among the winners’ side final four. In the meantime, Neil Fujiwara was busy sending Julio Aquino west with a 9-7 win. Fujiwara and Mills battled for the hot seat, with Mills sending Fujiwara to the semifinals with a 9-3 win.
On the one-loss side, James Roberts was working his way from among the final 12, defeating Josh Lewis and Justin Hall by identical 7-5 scores to face Sandaler. Tour director Tony Crosby advanced past Johnny Demet 7-2 and Jason Richko 7-3 to meet Aquino. Roberts got past Sandaler in a hill-hill struggle, but Crosby was dropped into the tie for fifth place with a 7-4 Aquino win. Roberts took the quarterfinals against Aquino 7-5 and the semifinals against Fujiwara 7-4.
In the finals that followed, Roberts, no doubt capitalizing on what had turned into a long wait for Mills, took an early 4-0 lead. Mills caught up rapidly, though, knotting the score at 5-5. The two traded racks through the next five, with Roberts reaching the hill first. Mills fought back to double-hill and then broke and ran to seal the victory.
In the handicapped amateur event, Jankowski bested Richard Murray to gain the hot seat and waited for his return. On the one-loss side, Mike Delawder and Josh Degler advanced to the quarterfinals, with Degler winning 5-3 to move into the semifinals against Murray. Degler derailed Murray’s trip back to the finals with a hill-hill victory. The two worked to double-hill before Degler finished it.
In the finals, Degler’s designation as a high-level amateur gave Jankowski a two-rack advantage at the start of the race to 9. Degler erased Jankowski’s handicap advantage with two quick wins, including a 1-9 combination that tied it at 2-2. Degler won three in a row before Jankowski came back with two of his own to make it 5-4. They were his last two, as Degler won four straight to take top honors.
