After 12 hours of play on Saturday, the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s $1500 added amateur event at Kolby’s Korner in Cayce, SC has ended, leaving half the original field of 63 players left to decide the champion on Sunday.  Tournaments with an alternate break format tend to lead to some upsets, and this tournament was no exception.  During the first round of play, JR Farias met up with Boyd Bouknight.

Boyd could do no wrong in this set and steamrolled JR 8-3.  In the second round of play, Derek “Chewy” Leonard was drawn up against Matt Mancini.  Mancini was not daunted and emerged victorious 8-6 through some unforced errors from Leonard.  Chewy now has to battle through the one-loss side of the bracket to fight for the $1000 first place prize.   In third round play on the winners side, two of the pre-tournament favorites met up in Greg Dix and Jason “J-Byrd” Brown.  Dix jumped out to a commanding 6-2 lead and looked to be cruising to the hill when he missed a very makeable 7-ball.

Brown took full advantage of the mistake and one more miss by Dix to knot the score up at 6-6.  A 1-9 combo in rack 13 brought Mr. Dix to the hill, and he was able to clear out a dry break by J-Byrd in rack 14 to secure the victory.  Scott Lewis, winner of the previous two GSBT amateur events, survived a few close calls to remain undefeated coming into Sunday play with come from behind victories over Joshua Johnson, (8-7) and Larry Jackson (8-7).  In both sets he was facing at least a three rack deficit when his opponent was on the hill and was able to sink the case 9-ball first.

As play was drawing to a close, a 7 man $100 buy in ring game began.  Greg Dix, Jared Mcgee, Rick Harrison, Dave Cook, Jason Heyward, Derek “Chewy” Leonard, and Adam Pendley put up their money to play for the $500 first place prize.  Second place won their entry fee back.  As of 4:00am EST, four players still remained.  The players and their chip counts were as follows:  Greg Dix $270, Jared Mcgee $170, Dave Cook $170, Rick Harrison $100, and Derek Leonard $30 and the bet was $20 a rack per person.  Jason Heyward and Adam Pendley were both eliminated during the same rack earlier.

Sunday play begins at 1:00pm with the following one-loss bracket action: Tyler Mayfield vs. Tommy Chavis, John Sanders vs. Mike Snyder, Troy Lytle vs. TJ Peeples, Jeff Peele vs. Dave Cook, Casey Looper vs. Roger Jeffcoat, James Smith vs. JR Farias, Petri Nordling vs. Eric Charlton, and Derek Leonard vs. Brian Timmons.  Waiting in the wings in for the winners of these matches are Peanut, Wilson Mena, Jason Brown, Jeff Murrah, Tony Butler, and Larry Jackson.  Winners bracket matches begin at 3:00pm EST and feature these matches: Matt Mancini vs. Adam Pendley, Jason Heyward vs. Jared Mcgee, Scott Lewis vs. Bud Coats, and Mike Patton vs. Greg Dix.
