Brown Lands Legends Billiard Title
Legends of One-Pocket / Lexington, SC
by Skip Maloney
Josh Roberts, Cliff Joyner, and Scott Rabon were among the more familiar names on hand for the Legends of One-Pocket Tournament held at Grady’s in Lexington, SC, the weekend of December 5-7, but it was Jason “J-Bird” Brown who emerged as the eventual winner. Brown gave up only one match on his way to victory in the $1,250-added event, which drew 21 entrants.
Brown’s only defeat was a 4-1 victory by Rabon during their match among the winners’ side final four. Rabon moved on to face Norris Brady, who’d sent Roberts west 4-2. Rabon then gained the hot seat with a 4-1 win and waited for “J-Bird” to fly back.
Joyner, in the meantime, along with room owner Grady Matthews, was struggling on the one-loss side among the matches that would decide the four-way tie for ninth place. Joyner and Matthews both advanced with 3-1 victories over David Carver and Boyd Bouknight, respectively. While Joyner moved past Jeff Blatell with a shut-out win, Matthews was dropped into the tie for seventh place with a 3-1 victory by Brian White.
That was as far as Joyner and White got. Roberts and Brown dropped them both into fifth place and squared off against each other in the quarterfinals. Brown got by Roberts 3-1 and then survived a hill-hill struggle against Brady for his shot at Rabon.
Rabon opened the final proceedings with a victory, and Brown promptly tied it. Rabon won game three before Brown took command, winning the next and final three to take home the $1,000 first prize.
