In the first annual Maryland State One-Pocket Billiards Championships, Brandon Shuff shook off a shut-out defeat in the hot seat match to return and defeat Max Schlothauer in the finals, capturing the first-place prize. Hosted by Side Pockets Bar & Grill, the $1,000-added event drew 31 one-pocket specialists to Laurel, MD, the weekend of November 1-2.

Working from among the winners’ side final four, Shuff and Schlothauer sent Leonardo Andam and Shawn Toni west by identical 3-1 scores before facing each other in the hot seat match. Schlothauer’s 3-0 victory made him the favorite at that point to take it all.

On the one-loss side, Andam and Toni were met by Eddie Abraham and Pookie Rasmeloungon, respectively. Abraham had dropped Kevin Gardner into a tie for seventh place, as Rasmeloungon was doing the same to Sam Monday. It was Abraham and Rasmeloungon advancing to the quarterfinals with 3-0 shut-outs of Andam and Toni. In the hill-hill struggle that followed, Rasmeloungon advanced to take on Shuff, who defeated him 3-1 for a second chance at Schlothauer.

In the race-to-5 finals, Schlothauer solidified his status by winning the first three games. Shuff, however, fought back to tie it 3-3, before giving up the next rack to put Schlothauer on the hill. For a second time, Shuff battled back to get to double-hill. In the subsequent and final ninth rack, Shuff made what event organizer Danny Greene called “a bank shot that just shouldn’t have been made” and ended Schlothauer’s bid for an undefeated weekend.
