After a week of intense competition the Great Southern Billiard Tour Players Championships at King Street Billiards in Fayetteville, NC came to a climatic conclusion. Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton, tournament promoter for the GSTB, claimed tonight what he said was, “among the greatest and overall best win I ever got!”, by winning the 10-ball division against undefeated John “Hennessee” Pinegar 10-4. In the one-pocket division, tournament favorite, Gabe Owen, remained undefeated against BCA and one-pocket Hall of Famer Nick Varner in the semi-finals and finals.
Coming into the afternoon semi-final matches, the question on everyone’s mind was whether or not Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant the only player left in both divisions would be able to claim both titles. Charlie played match after match from noon until the early Monday morning without a break. The grind of playing continous matches of different skill sets finally caught up to him, when he lost to Shannon Daulton 9-7. Charlie began dominating the set with a 6-2 lead, but could not hold on when Shannon seized the momentum and tied the game 6-6. Shannon, after losing to Jonathan “Hennessee” Pinegar in a match he felt he shot sub par, proved to himself and everyone that he had not lost his touch as a player, and earned the re-match.
Nick Varner proved why he is a one-pocket hall of famer by losing to only Gabe Owen in the entire one-pocket dlivision. At the end of the tournament Varner admitted that after losing in the winner’s side semi finals to Owen he was hoping for at least one win in the finals. Gabe showed cool and confident demeanor throughout the week and after winning the title dedicated it to his recently cancer diagnosed step-father. It demonstrated that his motivation in the tournament was not only a claim to fame but a sincere and heartfelt drive.

Shannon and Gabe were not the only winners tonight. Charlie emerged victorious tonight although he was not in either division final. Shannon Daulton proclaimed that he showed endless determination and grit by claiming 3rd place in both divisions and awarded him on the spot a promise for an “Overall Iron Man” Championship. Overall the Tournament proved to be a great success thanks to the help of King Street Billiards for donating not only $25,000 to the prize fund but their time and workers as well. The Tournament would not be possible also without Nick Varner Cues and Cases, Master Chalk, Tiger Products, Delta 13 rack, and Professor Q Ball. We look forward to the next event and ask you to check back on our site for more updates.
