by Skip Maloney
Steve Knoll came back from the one-loss side to defeat Trey Jankowski in the finals of the J. Pechauer All-American Tour stop in Port Charlotte, FL, November 16. The $250-added amateur event was hosted by Q’s Sports Bar and Grill in Port Charlotte, FL, and drew 14 entrants.
Earlier in the day, Jankowski, after sending Randy Smith west 7-5, met Glenn Olson in the hot seat match. Olson had defeated Buddy Folberth 7-1 to get there and followed him over into the semifinals on the heels of a 7-3 victory by Jankowski, leaving him in the hot seat.
Meanwhile, on the one-loss side, Knoll was working his way back. He defeated Frank Strain 7-4 and Rick Taugner 7-2 for the right to meet Smith. Ted Otakan defeated Tony Mancuso and then Ken Coulter by identical 7-2 scores to meet Folberth. Knoll advanced to the quarterfinals with a shut-out over Smith. Otakan allowed Folberth only a single rack in his bid to face Knoll.
Knoll won the next two 7-4—against Folberth in the quarterfinal match and Olson in the semifinals—and turned his attention to the double-elimination finals against Jankowski. He won his third straight 7-4 match in the opening set and went one better in the second set, defeating Jankowski 7-3 and taking top honors.
