Tony “T-Rex” Chohan defeated Sam Monday twice October 9 to take first place in the Carolina Open’s $5000-added one-pocket tournament, hosted by Fast Eddie’s in Goldsboro, NC.

Earlier in the evening, Chohan and Monday faced each other in the hot seat match after sending the eventual third- and fourth-place finishers, Jeff Abernathy and Scott Rabon, respectively, to the west side. Chohan gained the hot seat with a 3-0 victory. In the meantime, Abernathy and Rabon moved over and, in double-hill battles, dropped Larry Kressel and Brandon Shuff into a tie for fifth place. Abernathy then defeated Rabon 3-1 before falling to Monday 3-0 in the semifinals.

The race-to-five final match was a back-and-forth affair that was tied at 3-3 two hours after it had begun. An hour later, the match went to hill-hill. In the final game, Monday looked to have a good table for a run-out but scratched, looking for position on the 10 ball. With ball in hand, Chohan caught up and both were down to their final ball. A game of cat and mouse ensued until Monday left Chohan with a straight-on shot at the 10 and it was over.

In the 10-ball division, Johnny Archer, Earl Strickland, and Charlie Bryant were among the 32 players advancing in the opening round out of the total field of 53. Other players advancing into the second round on the winners’ side were both Chohan and Monday.

Archer’s 11-5 win over Delton Howard sets up a second-round match against Andrew Coley, who received a bye in the opening round. Strickland, who sent Gerry Shepherd west 11-3, will meet Tony Williams on Friday. Chau, who’d opened his tournament bid with an 11-8 victory over Eric Durbin, will face Wade Crane, who won his opening match with an 11-9 victory over Ronnie Wiseman.
