World Straight Pool Qualifier at Drexeline Billiards
By Bob Maidhof
With 19 billiard players attending, this was a grueling tournament starting at 10:30 am Saturday morning ending Sunday morning. In a nut shell it all boiled down to Ed Deska coming from the losers bracket having to beat Bob Cozzolino twice to claim a victory. The first match went in Ed Deska’s favor, 100/78. The second match was anyone’s game as Bob Cozzolino reached 88 balls then turned the table over to Ed Deska. Ed ran a couple of racks to reach 89 balls with a pretty standard break shot. We all could see the signs of fatigue in both players, as it was after 5:00 am in the morning now ,Sunday, almost a full day later.
Ed Deska missed the break ball, no question about it, fatigue had cost him the match. Bob Cozzolino rose from his chair to an open rack and carefully picked off the 12 balls he needed to win the qualifier. I wish we were giving two qualifying spots because Ed Deska showed great sportsmanship as well as the quality of his play. Drexeline Billiard Club would like to thank everyone that played as it was truly a endurance test, and all you guys held up like champs. Would like to thank Dragon Promotions for the opportunity to have this nice event. Next year plans are to make this a two day event. Congrats to Bob Cozzolino on his fine play and victory. Good luck in the big one Bob.
