Kelly Fisher Wins WPBA U.S. Open
WPBA U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships / Norman, OK
by InsidePOOL Staff
Kelly Fisher became the new WPBA U.S. Open 9-Ball Champion, having defeated newcomer Iris Ranola in the final match. Hosted by the Riverwind Casino in Norman, OK, this four-day event featured surprises and upsets galore, not to mention a new points leader on tour.
In a dramatically lopsided final match, Fisher completely dominated her opponent. Two key errors from the start on Ranola’s part gave the first couple of racks to Fisher. She broke and ran out the following rack, and then though both players traded shots on the 5 ball, Fisher was the one who ended notching the win, making it 4-0 in her favor. Her second break and run-out brought her one more game closer to the goal line, but Ranola answered with her own to get on the board 5-1 Fisher. When Ranola scratched off of a kick shot, Fisher was able to reach the hill. She took the final rack easily to capture first place and the coveted title.
Even if she had not won this event, Fisher still would have taken over the top spot in the WPBA ranking system. By virtue of the considerably lower finishes of the previous top-four-ranked ladies, which would have been Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Ga Young Kim, and Xiaoting Pan, Kelly Fisher was able to overtake all of them to claim number one for herself for the first time in her career. Corr took sole possession of the second-place spot, while Kim and Pan are tied for third. Allison Fisher is in sixth place.
