Tyler Takes First Viking Championship Billiards Event
Viking Cue Amateur 9-Ball Tour / Atlanta, GA
The Viking Cue Amateur 9-Ball Tour held its first of five $2,500-added National Championship Series August 9-10. Hosted by Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, GA, a grand total of 106 participants flocked to vie for the $1,525 first-place prize, ultimately won by Billy Tyler.
Saturday night featured an eight-player, amateurs-only, winner-takes-all mini event. The format was a race-to-7, single-elimination event that Travis Dorn from Abeville, SC, was the victor in, claiming the top prize of $800.
Sunday featured a mini tournament of 16 amateur-only players competing for $500 winner-takes-all prize fund. The format for the Sunday mini tournament was race to 5, single elimination and was won by Shane Little from Howell, MI.
The main event, which kicked off Saturday, drew in 82 participants and was packed with action from the start. Jason Stemen defeated Tyler in the first set—from a 3-all tie, there was no stopping him, as he racked up four racks in a row to win 7-3. In set two of the true double-elimination event, Tyler jumped out to an early lead at 4-0, but Stemen’s determination to win the event quickly brought the score to 4-4. Tyler and Stemen battled it out with strong safety plays and even stronger shots, keeping the score knotted at 5-all and 6-all. In the final rack, Stemen broke but the cue ball shot straight into the side pocket, giving Tyler ball in hand with an open table. Tyler methodically made shot after shot and ran the final table for the win.
