Jentsch Cleans House at Ozone Billiards U.S. Amateur Open

German billiard phenom Dominic Jentsch cleaned house at the Ozone Billiards U.S. Open Amateurs and Lucasi Hybrid Classic hosted by Bankshot Billiards.

Once the 8-Ball division concluded on Thursday, the 3rd Annual U.S. Amateur Open continued with 9-Ball action for all ages and genders, concluding with the scotch doubles event on Sunday.

The first of the finals to wrap up on Sunday was the Women’s 9-ball division. Of the 18 women, Stephanie Mitchell of Wesley Chapel, Florida stormed through the field after losing her very first match of the tournament. The finals match between Mitchell and Ashea Erdahl of Phoenix, Arizona went to two sets with 4-2 and 4-1 outcomes. The determined Mitchell three-fouled Erdahl in the last game to take both sets. Cristina De La Garza of Austin, was also turning heads with her near flawless performance up until the semi-finals.

The Seniors’ 9-ball event also saw a double-dip finale as Joe Bartlett from Jacksonville returned from the B-side to get sweet revenge against Puerta Rican William Veguilla. Surprised at his own performance, “It’s really tough when you never play,” says Barlett.

The Juniors World 10-Ball Championships were played on the 9-foot tables and the finales in the pro arena pit simultaneously with the Lucasi Hybrid 10-ball finals. Billy Thorpe and Nick Tafoya fought hard to tie for third while viewers’ choice favorite Austin Murphy and German protégé Dominic Jentsch kept us all at the edge of our seats with a hill-hill match for the glory. In the end, after being down 8-6, Jentsch completed a tough run to get on the hill. He couldn’t stop smiling as he racked the balls for himself only to break and run the case game. Brianna Miller and Liz Lovely were also allowed to participate in the boys’ event and later played one set for first and second in the prize. Lovely never relinquished control in that match finishing with an 8-2 score.

The Scotch Doubles 9-Ball event included many players that could not make it for the 8-Ball and 9-Ball events, as well as some of the juniors’ parents. Samm Diep and Mike Fieldhammer left women’s champion Stephanie Mitchell and her partner Troy McCoy with a fourth place finish but after an unfortunate scratch at hill-hill against Erdahl and Josh Lewis, they would have to settle for third. In the single set finals, Erdahl and Lewis ultimate defeated Amy Poulter and Jason Sheerman for the scotch titles.

The Open 9-Ball event drew the largest field of 88 players and was also the last to wrap up. Final two on the B-side include Jacksonville’s own Ramsey Barrett and Tim Beba, leaving Beba with a fourth place finish while Barrett moved on the defeat Ryan Dunn for a shot at none other than, Dominic Jentsch himself. Barrett was anxious for another shot at Jentsch, but the results would be the same. Jentsch went straight from winning the hill-hill Juniors’ battle to defeating Barrett 6-3 as his mentor Thorsten Hohmann proudly watched.
