Undefeated Champion Crowned
Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Raleigh, NC
Twenty-five players descended on Brown’s Billiards in Raleigh, NC, for the August 9-10 stop of the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour. The aptly named Sidney Champion went undefeated to win not only first place but to qualify for the Carolina Open 10-ball division to be held this October.
In Sunday’s one-loss side matches, Ian Holt was ousted by Tony Morrison 7-5, while Brad Shearer joined Holt in seventh place courtesy of Michael Fuller 7-3. Both Holt and Shearer are junior players. From there, Morrison advanced to play Jeff Pruitt, who eliminated him in a double-hill match before going on to the quarterfinals against Fuller, who had just bested David Brown 7-2.
Fuller had few problems sending Pruitt home with fourth place, winning their match 7-3. Meanwhile, in the hot seat match, Brandon Pureza was fighting hard against Champion. It was a close-fought match, but Champion sent Pureza to the semifinals 7-5.
Making use of his momentum, Fuller continued on, powering through Pureza in the semifinals 7-0. However, his momentum was not enough to overpower Champion in the final race to 9, in which Champion triumphed with a 9-6 score.
