Yarborough Breezes Past Kennedy in J. Pechauer Billiards Stop
J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour / Fayetteville, GA
by Skip Maloney
In the first major event ever to be hosted by the Metro Sports Bar in Fayetteville, GA, Mitch Yarborough defeated Tommy Kennedy in the finals of the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour stop the weekend of August 2-3. The $1,000-added event drew 35 entrants to the Metro Sports Bar in what is hoped will be the first of many tournaments to be hosted there.
Kennedy and Yarborough squared off first in the hot seat match. Kennedy defeated Dimant Patel 9-3 to get there, as Yarborough, by the same score, defeated Tommy Lee Jones, who, in addition to being a BCA instructor for the venue, has a father who handles table maintenance and a mother who cooks there, as well. Yarborough sent Kennedy west with a 9-5 victory to take the hot seat.
On the one-loss side, Mike Newsome was working his way to the quarterfinals with early victories over Willis Knight and Barry Wilmington, followed by a hill-hill victory over Jones. T.F. Whittington, in the meantime, defeated Horace Godwin and Paul Turner before facing Patel and defeating him to move into the quarterfinals against Newsome. Newsome advanced 9-3 to the semifinals against Kennedy, who turned the tables on him with a 9-3 victory of his own to get back to a second chance against Yarborough.
With the hot seat match fresh in their minds, spectators expected something of a struggle, which never materialized. In what turned out to be the fastest match of the tournament, Kennedy won the first game before Yarborough caught fire, winning the next 11 to capture the first-place prize.
